Dennis Martire,
born on August 22, 1964, has built a remarkable career rooted in
advocacy for workers' rights and community well-being. As the Vice
President and Mid-Atlantic Regional Manager of the Laborers'
International Union of North America (LIUNA), Martire has become a
pivotal figure in the labor movement, tirelessly working to ensure fair
wages, safe working conditions, and opportunities for career advancement
for laborers.
Martire's journey with LIUNA began in April 1990
when he took on the role of International Representative for the
Jurisdictional Disputes Department. His dedication and drive soon led to
his appointment as Assistant Director and then Director of the
Laborers' Construction Department. His commitment to the union's mission
was further recognized in March 2000 when he was appointed Assistant
Regional Manager of the Mid-Atlantic Region. Just two years later, his
exceptional leadership was acknowledged with his election as Vice
President and Regional Manager, a role he continues to excel in.
One
of Martire's most notable achievements was his instrumental role in the
historic union victory during the Fluor-Lane expansion of Route 495 Hot
Lanes Project in Virginia. Thanks to his efforts, over 200 workers were
given the choice to join a union, and they overwhelmingly voted to
become members of LIUNA Local 11. This election marked one of the
largest union victories in the construction industry in Virginia,
setting a precedent for labor rights in the state.
Martire's
influence extends beyond individual projects. He has been a staunch
advocate for prevailing wage laws, working closely with officials in
Montgomery County, Maryland, to pass legislation that ensures fair wages
for working families. Martire understands that these laws not only
protect workers but also ensure that taxpayers receive better returns on
public investments. Studies consistently show that prevailing wage laws
do not increase costs but rather promote efficiency and safety in
public works.
In addition to his advocacy work, Dennis Martire
oversees LIUNA's comprehensive training programs, which provide
continuous education and skill development for its members. Under his
leadership, these programs have become a cornerstone of the union,
helping workers advance in their careers or transition into new fields.
By empowering laborers with the skills they need to succeed, Martire has
helped create a more skilled and adaptable workforce, benefiting both
the workers and the communities they serve.
Martire's leadership
extends beyond LIUNA as well. He serves on numerous boards and
committees, including the American High Speed Rail Alliance Advisory
Board, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) Board of
Directors, and the Pennsylvania Workforce Investment Board, among
others. His involvement in these organizations underscores his
commitment to improving transportation infrastructure, public safety,
and workforce development across the Mid-Atlantic region.
A proud
member of Local Union #1058 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Martire's
dedication to the labor movement is deeply personal. He believes that
every laborer deserves not only fair pay and safe working conditions but
also the opportunity to build a secure future for themselves and their
families. This mission drives his work every day, as he continues to
advocate for policies and practices that uplift workers and strengthen
communities.
Martire's achievements are a testament to his
unwavering commitment to the labor movement and his ability to bring
about meaningful change. Whether through legislative advocacy, union
organizing, or workforce training, he has consistently worked to improve
the lives of laborers and their families. Today, Dennis Martire resides
in Northern Virginia with his family, where he continues to be a
champion for workers' rights and a beacon of hope for those who seek a
better future.
