A Foundation in Government, A Career in Labor
Dennis Martire’s path to labor leadership began with a Bachelor of Science in government from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1986. Four years later, he joined the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA), embarking on a career that would span over three decades. Today, as vice president and regional manager of LIUNA’s Mid-Atlantic region, Martire is a driving force for worker empowerment and fair labor practices.
Climbing the Ranks with Dedication
Starting as an international representative in 1990, Martire quickly demonstrated his commitment to LIUNA’s mission. He advanced to assistant director and assistant for the construction department before becoming assistant regional manager in 2000. By 2002, his peers elected him to his current role, recognizing his ability to lead and advocate for laborers across the Mid-Atlantic.
Empowering Workers Through Unionization
One of Martire’s standout achievements was his leadership in forming LIUNA Local 11 during the Route 495 Hot Lanes Project. By giving workers the choice to unionize, he secured a historic victory for Virginia’s construction industry, with over 200 workers joining the new local chapter. This effort highlighted Martire’s skill in uniting workers for collective strength and better working conditions.
Championing Fair Wages in Maryland
In Montgomery County, Maryland, Dennis Martire worked tirelessly to pass prevailing wage laws, ensuring laborers receive fair compensation. These laws have improved worker livelihoods while promoting safer and more efficient public projects. Martire’s advocacy demonstrates that fair wages benefit both workers and the communities they serve.
A Respected Voice on Regional Boards
Martire’s influence extends to his roles on key boards, such as the American High Speed Rail Alliance Advisory Board and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Organizing Coalition. Through these platforms, he advocates for policies that support laborers, from improved transportation funding to enhanced training programs. His expertise ensures that workers’ voices are heard at the highest levels.
Building a Skilled and Safe Workforce
Beyond policy advocacy, Martire has prioritized workforce development through training programs that enhance worker skills and safety. These initiatives empower laborers to excel in their roles while improving job security and workplace safety across the Mid-Atlantic region.
A Legacy of Leadership and Impact
Residing in northern Virginia, Dennis Martire continues to lead LIUNA with a focus on improving the lives of laborers. His three-decade career is marked by significant achievements in union growth, wage fairness, and worker safety, making him a true champion for the Mid-Atlantic’s working men and women.
